The elective term is a compulsory component of the MBBS course. Students in both Year 4 and Year 5 2009 are required to do an elective placement of 4-6 weeks in one of the following areas:
a hospital or medical institution in Australia or overseas; or
with a medical practitioner in Australia or overseas.
It is the responsibility of students to organise their elective and it is strongly advised to start making arrangements early in the year, especially for overseas placements. It is especially important to request an appropriate person to act as a supervisor. For further information contact the Electives Co-ordinator, Tanya Rogers, Electives@med.utas.edu.au (6226 4711). All documentation will be approved by the Academic Co-ordinator, Dr Silvana Bettiol, S.Bettiol@utas.edu.au (6226 4823).
Information booklets providing specific details and further information for Year 4 and 5 in 2010 can be accessed from the following:

Students who are completing an elective in a tropical or developing region are strongly advised to seek advice regarding the health and safety implications of their elective from their GP, the University Health Service or from a travel health specialist. It is recommended that Mantoux negative students intending to take an elective in a developing area seek advice regarding TB prior to departure and either be immunised or have a Mantoux Test three months after their return.
Students requiring financial assistance may be eligible for OS-Help which is a Commonwealth loan that assists eligible students to undertake some of their study overseas.
Medical Students of this University are covered for medical malpractice insurance excluding the USA and Canada. You are also encouraged to take out private indemnity insurance from a medical defence organisation such as MIPS or MDA. Membership is free for all medical students.
Personal travel insurance is strongly recommended. You will need to ensure that it includes cover in case of the need for medical evacuation. Associate Professor Greg Woods will be your emergency contact with the University of Tasmania while you are on your elective. His contact details will be given on request.
In preparation for your elective, all students are encouraged to advise the Australian Government's Travel Advisory and Consular Service.
The Clinical Library holds reports from past students who have been awarded the Kathleen Menzies Travelling Prize (worth $1,000). These reports may help you choose where you would like to spend your elective. The aim of this scholarship is for students to spend time in a clinical setting outside Tasmania. Information regarding other prizes available can be found at the School of Medicine prizes website.
Assessment - Year 5 Elective
On completion of the elective students are required to complete the two page Elective Report and your supervisor must complete a Certificate of Performance form. These forms are a requirement for the Year 6 portfolio and both of these forms must be submitted to the Electives Co-ordinator before 01 February 2010.
Assessment - Year 4 Elective
Students are required to complete a logbook during the course of their elective. Content should be no more than ½ a page per week with an overall summary at the end. This must show that the learning objectives were achieved and provide information regarding the elective and evidence of dedication to the placement. You can download copies of the following:
A hard copy of the logbook is to be handed in to the 4/5 Administrative Officers at your Clinical School before 5 February 2010. Failure to do so could compromise your enrolment for 2010. The logbook is a requirement of the portfolio assessment for 2010.
