The CCR was established as part of the Partners in Health initiative
between the Tasmanian State Government Department of Health and Human Services
(DHHS), and the University's Faculty of Health Sciences in 2002. Space was
agreed in the form of the recently relocated Lade Nursing Library area and
some adjoining rooms in the Campbell Street Education Building; funding was
obtained largely through the auspices of the tripartite agreement involving
DHHS, Royal Hobart Hospital, and Hobart Private Hospital.
The aim of the CCR is to formally align the substantial amount
of research being conducted by the hospital's clinical staff with that
of the University of Tasmania (particularly in the School of Medicine), and
to address the lack of research facilities available for clinical research
within both establishments.
The clinical research groups (listed with their leaders), directly
housed in the Centre for Clinical Research are:
| Director: |
Professor EH (Haydn) Walters |
| Respiratory Medicine |
Dr Richard Wood-Baker / Dr David Reid |
| Oncology |
Professor Ray Lowenthal |
| Neurology |
|
| Rehabilitation Medicine |
|
| Geriatric and Stroke Medicine |
Dr David Dunbabin |
| Diabetes and Endocrinology |
A/Prof John Burgess |
| Renal Medicine |
Dr Geoff Kirkland |
| Hypertension |
Professor David Kilpatrick |
| Ant Immunotherapy |
Mr Michael Wiese |
In addition, other groups (not directly housed in the Centre
for Clinical Research) are also part of the "umbrella" organisation:
namely, Intensive Care , Emergency
Medicine , Cardiology and Infectious Diseases .
A Management Committee has been formed from the leaders of these research
groups. All the research leaders have clinical academic appointments, but
also have special status as CCR members, able to apply for University
Scholarships and research funds, and be eligible to supervise higher degree
students.
The vision of the Centre for Clinical Research will be to forge closer collaborative
links between clinical research and "basic"research scientists in
the Tasmanian School of Medicine. The strategic research groups within the
School of Medicine closely align with many of the CCR's clinical activities.
The CCR will also form a Clinical Research arm of the Menzies Research
Institute.
