The Medical Education Unit - Assessment

MEU & Assessment in the MBBS

The MEU supports assessment activities for the MBBS and other courses offered by the School of Medicine.

For further information, please contact Dr Bunmi Malau-Aduli (Assessment Officer).

School of Medicine

The MBBS Curriculum Forum endorsed the use of the following Assessment QA processes in place at the School of Medicine. Templates have been developed for the development and classification of EMQ and MCQs. Templates have also been developed for standardising the reporting assessment data to the School Examiners' Meeting - this template faciliates identification of QA processes, and identifies meritorious and poor performance. The QA processes implemented in 2009 have already yeilded signficant improvements in the quality of assessment activities in the MBBS (see this example for a Level 1 unit of study).

The MEU routinely generates Assessment reports of all summative examinations in the MBBS program. The standard analysis report for academic and clinical staff who contribute items for the assessment includes definitions of terms, and graphical and numerical data for the whole examination. The report for Unit coordinators and Chairs of Assessment committees include the same definitions, graphical and numerical data, with additional data on each question in the examination. The following are typical analysis templates for MCQ, EMQ instruments which form the basis for discussion and review of items after the examination
