2009 - Commencing Students Information

Bachelor of Medicine / Bachelor of Surgery
(MBBS) Students 2009

Welcome to the School of Medicine at the University of Tasmania. Below is some important information that you need to know about the MBBS course and commencing study at the University of Tasmania.   Please read the information carefully. If you have any questions that are not covered below please contact us on the number listed and we will do what we can to assist you.

 

UNIVERSITY ID CARDS
Student ID cards can be arranged at the UTAS Student Centre from 8:30am - 4pm, Monday to Friday.

COMPULSORY UNITS
The two compulsory units you will be studying in 2009 are CAM101 and CAM102.   There are no optional or elective units in the MBBS course.

Please note that there is no credit awarded for previous study in the MBBS.

 

ORIENTATION DAYS - 18 to 20 February 2009
All Year 1 MBBS students are required to attend the orientation and briefing sessions provided by the Tasmanian School of Medicine Academic Staff and the Tasmanian University Medical Students Society (TUMSS) in Hobart on 18, 19 and 20 February 2009. The School of Medicine will provide an opportunity to meet other medical students and some of your lecturers. You will also be provided with a detailed overview of he curriculum.   An Orientation Pack will be forwarded to each enrolled student in early February 2009.

An orientation timetable will be posted closer to the date.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND PRIZES
Please check the School of Medicine website ( http://www.medicine.utas.edu.au/prizes/index.html ) for detailed information on the scholarships and prizes that are available to students throughout their course.

EMAIL
On enrolment you will be allocated an email address. The School of Medicine uses this email address as its primary form of communication with students so it is very important that you check your email regularly. Your email can be accessed via the internet, and you can arrange for your messages to be forwarded to any other email address you nominate by contacting the University's IT Resources section on 6226 1818. There is no excuse for missing out on information because you haven't checked your email.

Welcome to the Bachelor of Medical Research.   This information has been provided in order to help you fill out your enrolment form.   The first year units for full-time students are prescribed and are pre-printed on your enrolment form.   Please take a moment to review the units, and follow the instructions for signing and returning your form.

Alternative first year for students wishing to include Psychology

Students wishing to include Psychology will need to take the alternative first year structure in order to meet the pre-requisites.   Please study the course schedules carefully to determine whether or not you wish to take up this option.   Schedules are in the online Course and Unit Handbook

If you wish to take up this option, you will need to draw a line through the units on your enrolment form that you do not wish to enrol in (KMA153 and KPZ164) and write in the details for KHA101 and KHA102 (see above).   In this case, you will need to take KPZ164 Cell Biology, Genetics & Evolution in your second year, along with KHA201 Psychology - Research Methods 2 in replacement of KMA153 Data Handling & Statistics.

Credit

If you think you are eligibile for credit from previous study either at the University of Tasmania or from another Univerity, at this stage you must still enrol in the relevant units.
Then fill in an Application for Credit form http://www.studentcentre.utas.edu.au/enrolments/forms_files/
These are available from, and should be submitted to, Student Administration.   If the study was at another institution, please attach as much information about the unit as possible.   You will then be assessed on whether or not you qualify for credit for a unit.   If you are successful you can then withdraw from that unit.

Part Time study

If you are studying part time, you may choose any units you wish, but you must have the appropriate pre-requisites and co-requisites (please check the Online Course and Unit Handbook for details.  

Please alter your enrolment form by drawing a line through any units you do not wish to enrol in.

For students commencing the first year of the Degree in Semester 2

Students may study part time in Semester 2. This option is ideal for people wishing to spread their first year of study over 18 months. For those intending to study a 100% load the unit choices may be restricted. You can choose any or all of the following units. Please amend your enrolment form by drawing a line through any units you not wish to enrol in, and adding the details of those you do.

KHA101 Psychology 1A is also offered during Spring Semester, and KHA102 Psychology 1B during Summer Semester.   (See section on including Psychology above)

It is not possible to enrol in second semester CHG106 Human Biology or CHG114 Histology & Cell Biology unless you have successfully completed the first semester unit.
